Meet Mark Maher
Today we'd like to introduce you to Mark Maher, the founder and driving force behind Celtic Axe Throwers. Mark's journey from entrepreneur to axe throwing pioneer is a story of passion, persistence, and a love for creating memorable experiences.
"I've always been drawn to businesses that bring people together," Mark explains."When I discovered axe throwing, I knew immediately that this was something special - something that could create those moments of connection and celebration that people crave."
The Celtic Axe Story
Celtic Axe Throwers started about four years ago with a simple idea: create a welcoming space where people could try something new, challenge themselves, and have an incredible time with friends and family.
"The Celtic name comes from my Irish heritage," Mark shares. "The Celts were known for their warrior spirit but also for their sense of community and celebration. That's exactly what we try to capture at our venues - that perfect blend of competition and camaraderie."
From the first location in Portland, the business has grown to include venues in Austin and San Diego, along with mobile units that bring the axe throwing experience to events and festivals across the country.
Growing the Business
Building Celtic Axe Throwers hasn't been without challenges. Mark navigated the complexities of a unique entertainment business, from safety regulations to finding the right locations and building a team of passionate coaches.
"The key has always been putting the experience first," Mark notes. "We invest in training our coaches, maintaining our equipment, and creating spaces where people feel comfortable trying something new. When guests leave happy and can't wait to come back, that's how you grow a business like this."
The business weathered the pandemic by adapting quickly, implementing safety protocols, and eventually emerging stronger as people sought unique, active entertainment options.
Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Mark sees continued growth for Celtic Axe Throwers and the axe throwing industry as a whole.
"We're always looking for new ways to enhance the experience," he says. "Whether that's expanding to new locations, developing new game formats, or partnering with local businesses to create unique event packages. The goal is always the same: give people an experience they'll remember."
For those thinking about trying axe throwing for the first time, Mark has simple advice:"Just come in and throw. You don't need any experience, any special skills. Our coaches will teach you everything, and I promise you'll be hitting targets and having a blast within minutes."
