Getting Started

Axe throwing is a thrilling game that combines skill, accuracy, and a bit of ancient warrior spirit. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced thrower wanting to refine your technique, this guide from our Celtic coaches will help.

The good news? Axe throwing is more accessible than it looks. Most people hit the target within their first few throws and land bullseyes before their session ends.

The Proper Grip

Your grip sets the foundation for a good throw. Here's how to hold the axe correctly:

  • Grip the bottom of the handle, not near the axe head
  • Use both hands for stability (beginners) or one hand (advanced)
  • Keep the blade straight up and down, not tilted
  • Hold firmly but not too tight - tense muscles hurt accuracy
  • Your dominant hand goes on bottom, guide hand on top

Think of holding a baseball bat or golf club. You want control without white-knuckling the handle.

Setting Your Stance

A consistent stance leads to consistent throws:

  • Face the target squarely with feet shoulder-width apart
  • Place your dominant foot slightly forward
  • Stand about 12-15 feet from the target (your coach will help you find the sweet spot)
  • Keep your weight centered, ready to shift forward
  • Relax your shoulders and breathe

Once you find a stance that works, try to replicate it exactly every time. Consistency is key.

The Throwing Motion

The throw should be smooth and controlled, not a powerful heave:

  1. Wind up: Bring the axe straight back over your head, keeping elbows close
  2. Step: As you begin the throw, step forward with your front foot
  3. Swing: Bring the axe forward in a smooth arc, keeping it straight
  4. Release: Let go when your arms are extended toward the target
  5. Follow through: Let your arms continue naturally after release

The release point is crucial. Release too early and the axe goes high; too late and it goes low. Your coach will help you find your optimal release point.

Expert Tips

After teaching thousands of people to throw, our coaches have identified key success factors:

  • Distance matters: If your axe over-rotates or under-rotates, adjust your distance
  • Don't overthink: Trust the technique and let your body do the work
  • Keep the wrist locked: Flicking your wrist causes inconsistent rotation
  • Focus on the target: Look where you want the axe to land
  • Take your time: Quality throws beat quantity every time
  • Have fun: Relaxed throwers perform better than tense ones
